Structures in Hyperspace

A major part of this book is based on the results of multivariate analyses of data, providing a view into the hyperspace of events under scrutiny. To describe hyperspace, one has to decompose it into subspaces of less than four dimensions, and describe dimensions of these subspaces and their mutual interrelationships. The partitioning of a hyperspace into its component subspaces is fraught with difficulties, and different views of subspaces within a hyperspace may lead into different interpretations of the same events. To illustrate this point, take a pencil and turn it in front of your eyes. There are many views possible of this object. At a certain position it may be interpreted as an exclamation mark, at another as a side view of a ladder. Among these many possible views, two views are optimal. One view, when the pencil approximates a line at a location orthogonal to your vantage point, allows you to perceive its true length. The other view, when the circumference of the pencil forms a perfect circle, allows you to perceive its true width. The properties of length and width are two principal components of a pencil, describing its two major dimensions. As another example, consider different views of a spiral galaxy as simulated by a cluster of points in a virtual world.
